Hi All!
You wouldn´t beleive how hard it is for me to get online most days. Just too busy. But here is the latest news from home. We got the room downstairs in the upstairs house finished. It looks great. New windows, walls, ceiling. No more cathedral room! Bright even! Finally I decided on a plan for another room there and what to do with the patio as well. I have to cut down the two avacado trees. They flower big but in the past two years we have eatten only 4 fruits from these trees. And the rats have found that they are hollow. So they nest in the trees and climb onto the roof and into the house from the branches. It seems the only way to get more or less pest free is to drop them. Not to mention it is very difficult to build around them. Instead we will plant lots of nice green grass, run a gutter to provide drip irrigation and plant flowers all over. Nice patio with table and chairs, a new large tool room and another bright and airy bedroom with HUGE windows in smoked glass. Its gonna be great! As soon as I can afford the windows.
Other news- We finally have a hot shower! Its outside so you have a good view, but with water so hot you can boil yerself if you want (you can adjust it cooler of course). I am loving it loving it. And i am quite clean.
The rock house construction is coming along very slowly, hopefully some new volunteers will come and put some energy there but right now the going is excruciatingly slow. Oh well, at least the other house will be finished at last. And it will have a lovely tent site as well.
We got a new puppy, Boomer. He is fitting in really nicely, fat and happy. His compeñera is our new kitten, Clementine, who we discovered today is not the female we thought (s)he was (has testicles). Better, we do not need more cats than two, one per house. Well, three. Hans, who lives across the creek has Ivan. Clementine is fat and orange and white and will keep the same name anyway. I hope he moves up to the other house soon, and learns to get rats pretty fast! Its not a huge problem but cats are always helpful- its the organic way! Our goat, La Yapita, is also fat and happy.
MALARIA
I wanted to note here that anyone coming to visit need not worry about malaria or mosquitos. We do have a small biting fly that makes you itch if you get bit, but no disease bearing insects. We are at 5252´ so too high for those nasties to come on the farm. Nice, huh?
Volunteer organizations
I am looking for anyone to post our web page and directions to international volunteer organizations. If you have an address for any kind of place that sends volunteers let me know by email to chirusco@yahoo.com.
New home business
We began toymaking this week- jacobs ladders from wood. Fun, pleasant to make and pretty. Hopefully we can a small income from sales of these toys and Hans´ calimbas! I will post photos soon on this site and if anyone wants to order just let me know and I can mail them out.
Last notes- if you are coming from the US or Europe we need seeds for flowers and the gardens. Also LED flashlights.
I am trying to maintain our open door policy and so far so good. Anyone wanting to come visit should write me if they can, but just showing up is OK with all of us if you must. If you come at night, yell and we will come find you! I ask everyone remember that while you live at NNL you own the place. Treat the whole farm as your home, this includes all the priviledges and responsibilities of ownership. The nice thing is you cannot fuck it up, work in the areas that please you, cook your meals with everyone all together (lately cooking sessions seem to be getting better and better!). Eat the fruits we all harvest and pitch in equally with everyone else on groceries. Avocados are gonna be a double season this year, in fact we had guacamole today. And everything else is bursting with fruits. We even have lots of tropical macademias now, the tree being a recent discovery.
