Directions to Never, Never Land
Start in Vilcabamba by stocking up on supplies and/or leaving a message (see the other directions for where).
From Vilcabamba catch a bus or a taxi to Tumianuma (the last daylight bus leaves at 4:30 from the terminal.
Ask someone to tell you where to get off, but after about half an hour keep an eye out for the blue altar in the middle of the street in downtown Tumianuma.
Get off the bus here, from now on we ´re walking!
From the altar you can see a dirt road go off into the jungle...
...which is exactly where we want to go.
After about 5 minutes we will reach this pedestrian bridge.
Cross it, and bear left to stay on the main path
Follow a trail that looks like this for 20 min.
Don´t turn off, or take a gate, unless I say so.
Like this simple gate right on the main path.
It´s usually open, but if its closed close it behind you.
This is a tricky fork, with three possibilities.
The lower goes to a gate, the upper goes up the mountain. But only the MIDDLE path is correct.
Here the road forks again
One path continues straight, the one on the left goes down to a gate and continues past it. Go down, and walk past the gate.
This is the gate mentioned above.
Do NOT go through the gate. Take a right and continue on for about 100m.
You will quickly reach a gate before a stream.
Go through this gate, and take a look at the stream. Often you can just walk up the stream for about 5 minutes to the farm, but if it's been raining a lot lately that would be dangerous so we'll have to go another way.
If the Stream is NOT Overflowing | OR | If the Stream is overflowing |
Follow this stream upstream for about half a mile.Your feet WILL get wet. But don´t worry, you are almost there!
Soon you will see a black and white gate with writing on the nearby rocks.
And that gate is it. You made it! Walk a few hundred feet up the trail until you see the houses. It´s less than a five minute walk through trees laden with fruit and past an old stone house foundation before you make it to the lower house. |
Turn around, and go back to the last place the path forked.
This time, go forward instead of left. You will go through a gate that is made of barbed wire and sticks. Go through this gate and continue on the trail. You will come to a clearing on your left with an abandoned houseon the other end of the field. Walk across this property (this land is for sale, but is maintained by Julio), towards the house and go through the gate on the other end (right next to the house.) Take the slightly overgrown trail right in front of you and go through two simple gates. On your left you should see the "Leap of Faith" bridge. Cross it, and welcome, you've arrived at Never Never Land. Follow the stream downstream a little way to find the houses, and yell so we can come out to great you. |
Welcome! You should have gotten here, from Tumianuma in 25-50 minutes.
You've arrived, now go stretch out in that hammock!
